1980–81 NHL season

The NHL 1980/81 season was the 64th season in the National Hockey League. 21 teams each played 80 games. The Stanley Cup won by the New York Islanders after a 4-1 victory in the final series against the Minnesota North Stars. To 2.05 points per game it brought Wayne Gretzky in this season. Only Joe Malone had achieved a higher average in the first season in the NHL. Gretzky broke with 109 assists the record of Bobby Orr and with 164 points, the record of Phil Esposito. The two records had placed Orr and Esposito together with the Boston Bruins 10 years ago. Esposito told later that his father had called him a few years ago, after he had seen Gretzky in a youth game and said: "I saw a boy who will break all your records ." Marcel Dionne in Los Angeles led to the " Triple Crown Line" with Dave Taylor and Charlie Simmer and succeeded in his 740th game his thousandth point. Never had reached that mark faster a player. As the second player after Maurice Richard managed Islanders star Mike Bossy in his 50th season playing his 50th goal. Two Czechs attended in Quebec for attention. At the Olympic Games last year, the brothers Anton and Peter Šťastný had deposed and Peter took it in his rookie season on 109 points. For this he won the Calder Memorial Trophy. The Association of Czechoslovakia reached an agreement with the NHL and so the players could legally change from next season in the NHL. Among them, the third Šťastný - brother Marián.

In the game, Los Angeles Kings against the New York Rangers came on April 8, 1981 in Los Angeles at a penalty minute world record. The referee imposed 58 penalties against 25 players with a total of 267 penalty minutes.
