The SM- liiga season 1980/81 was the sixth season of the Finnish SM- liiga. Finnish Champion for the first time ever Kärpät Oulu.

Regular Season
Mode
The ten teams in the SM- liiga first played in 36 regular season games against each other. During the first six teams for the play- offs qualified, the two last placed athlete had to play against the two best second- division club to avoid relegation. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.

Play-offs
Mode
Places 1 and 2 were qualified for the semifinals and the places 3-6 for the quarter- finals of the play-offs. The winners of those ties made it to the finals while the losers in the small final for third place played.
The quarter-finals and the match for third place were held in the mode " Best-of- Three", the semi-final and the final of the mode " Best-of -Five".

SM- liiga relegation
The two last placed SM- liiga the main round and the two best second division played in round-trip game for promotion or relegation. Jokerit Helsinki and Rauma Lukko both secured confidently with ten points in the league.
