1980 Tour de France

The 67th Tour de France was held to 20 July 1980 of 26 June. She led on 22 stages over 3945.5 km. Had become after the Dutchman Joop Zoetemelk already five times second ( Tour 1970, 1971, 1976, 1978 and 1979 ), won the now 33 -year-old in 1980 but still the French tour. It was attended by 130 racers participated in the tour, of which 85 were classified.

Race course

The prologue of the Tour was held for the second time in Germany, to Cologne in 1965, this time in Frankfurt am Main. After that led two half- stages to Wiesbaden and Frankfurt again.

Defending champion Bernard Hinault was the clear favorite in the race and won early three stages. In the Pyrenees, he took the yellow jersey from the long leading Belgian Rudy Pevenage but had to retire from the lead due to an illness the race.

This paved the way for the "Tour of the Dutchman": Joop Zoetemelk triumphed in the overall standings ahead of countryman Hennie Kuiper, in total there were twelve Dutch stage wins from seven different riders.
