1981–82 AHL season
The 1981/82 season was the 46th regular season of the American Hockey League ( AHL ). During the regular season, the eleven teams played each 80 encounters. The eight best teams in the AHL then played in a play-off round to the Calder Cup.

Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Fredericton Express were added as an expansion team in the league
- The Erie Blades of the Eastern Hockey League were included as an expansion team in the league

Calder Cup Playoffs
Mode
For the play-offs, the eight best teams in the AHL qualified. In the South Division to the Fifth qualified Adirondack Red Wings, as this in the regular season reached more points than the fourth of the North Division, the Springfield Indians in the first two play-off rounds, the winner of each division were played. In round three, the two division winners to the finals. The first play-off round was played in best- of-five mode, the second play-off round and the finals were played in best- of-seven mode.
