The NHL Entry Draft in 1981, the annual talent contraction of the National Hockey League, took place on 10 June 1981 at the Montreal Forum in Montreal, Canada, in the province of Quebec instead.

A total of 211 players were taken in ten rounds. The draft was not occupied with many great talents, due to the work of the good talent scouts of the vintage were drawn on the first places. Only the Los Angeles Kings had proved with their choice in the second place no knack, and Chris Chelios had to wait with his drawing to the end of the second round. With Dieter nurture and Uli Hiemer two German players have been selected again after 1978. Special Czechoslovakian Entry Draft

Prior to the Entry Draft, a special draft for players from Czechoslovakia had already taken place on May 28. Here were the case that they would be allowed a move to North America, awarded the rights to four players. These were Ivan Hlinka ( elected by the Winnipeg Jets), Bohuslav Ebermannsdorf (Detroit Red Wings ), Jiří Bubla (Colorado Rockies ) and Vladimír Martinec (Hartford Whalers ).

After Hlinka a move to Winnipeg refused because he did not want to play there as the only Czechoslovak, he signed together with Bubla a contract with the Vancouver Canucks. This led to a dispute between the franchises. While NHL president John Ziegler legitimized the closed contracts, Alan Eagleson threatened as chairman of the players' union National Hockey League Players Association with countermeasures. The two players announced in the episode again to play in Europe if their contracts would not be recognized, after which the teams agreed on a compensation. Vancouver gave Brent Ashton and a fourth -round choice right in the NHL Entry Draft in 1982 at Winnipeg, who sent in return Lucien Deblois and a draft law in the third round of the same year to Colorado.
