1982 UEFA European Under-16 Championship

The first U-16 Football Championship was held in the period from 5 to 7 May 1982 in Italy. Winners Italy was a 1-0 victory over West Germany. The GDR retired in the second round against Germany.

Qualification

The qualifying was attended by 26 nations, they were distributed on a geographical basis to a total of 8 groups. Group 1 consisted of only two participants, three groups of four participants and the remaining four groups of three participants. All eight group winners came in the second round, the winner after return game reached the final round.

Second round

The eight group winners were divided by lot to four quarter-finals. The four winners, after return game and qualified for the final tournament.

Mode

The four finalists were divided by lot to two semi-finals. The winners played in the European Championship, the losers playing for third place.
