1982 World Fencing Championships

The 32nd World Fencing Championships took place in Rome between 14 and 24 July 1982. Eight competitions were held, six for men and two for women.

The competitions were overshadowed by a serious accident between the reigning world and Olympic champion foil Vladimir Smirnov, Matthias Behr. The tip of Behr's foil broke and penetrated through the protective mask and eye in Smirnov's a brain; Schmirnow succumbed after the end of the World Cup on 29 July his injuries.
