1983–84 SM-liiga season
The SM- liiga season 1983/84 was the ninth season of the Finnish SM- liiga. Finnish Champion became the eighth time overall and for the fourth time since the introduction of the SM - liiga Tappara Tampere, during last year's Up HPK Hämeenlinna relegation to the second division.

Regular Season
Mode
The ten teams in the SM- liiga first played in 37 regular season games against each other. During the first six teams for the play- offs qualified, the two last placed athlete had to play against the two best second- division club to avoid relegation. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.

Note: The Olympic selection Finland played in preparation for the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo against any team in the SM- liiga a game. In ten games had the choice of four wins, two draws and four defeats and a goal difference of 41:38.
Play-offs
Mode
Places 1 and 2 were qualified for the semifinals and the places 3-6 for the quarter- finals of the play-offs. The winners of those ties made it to the finals while the losers in the small final for third place played.
The quarter-finals and the match for third place were held in the mode " Best-of- Three", the semi-final and the final of the mode " Best-of -Five".

SM- liiga relegation
The two last placed SM- liiga the main round and the two best second division played in the mode " Best-of -Five" for promotion or relegation. In the Relegation to Kiekko - Reipas secured the league, while HPK Hämeenlinna could not prevent the re- direct descent.
