1983 Women's European Volleyball Championship

The European Women's Volleyball, 1983, from 17 to 25 September in the GDR instead. The Games were held in Rostock, Schwerin and Cottbus. The hosts were the first German team European champion.

Mode

The twelve participants were divided into the first round in three groups of four. The group winners and runners-up were summarized in the final round to a group. In the mode " all against all " they determined the tournament winner. The remaining teams played to the ranks of seven to twelve. Results from teams that already clashed in the first round were incorporated into the final round.

The GDR became European Champion with Maike Arlt, Monika Beu, Andrea home, Catrin Heydrich, Grit Jensen, Ramona Landgraf, Heike Lehmann, Karla Mügge, Ute Oldenburg, Ariane Radfan, C. Schott and Barbara White. The Federal Republic of Germany was number five with Renate Riek, Terry Place Brandel, Gudrun Witte, Regina Vossen, Danuta Niemietz, Marina Staden, Sigrid Terstegge, Beate Bühler, Almut Kemperdick, Gabi and Angela Lorenz Liebelt.

Qualification

The GDR was set as host. The top five teams in the European championship in 1981 were also automatically qualified. These were Bulgaria as the defending champion, the Second Soviet Union, the Third Hungary, Poland, the Fifth and Sixth of Czechoslovakia.

Six other teams reached the finals via qualifiers that took place in April and May. In Group A, the Federal Republic and the Netherlands prevailed over Finland, Norway and Belgium. In group B, who played in Vienna, Italy and France were successful against Yugoslavia, Austria and Switzerland. For Group C Romania and Sweden qualified.
