1984 Canada Cup

The Canada Cup 1984 ( French Coupe Canada 1984) was the third edition of the competition of the same name. He was held in North American cities Buffalo, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, London, Montreal and Vancouver from 1 to 18 September 1984. The International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF, the North American professional league National Hockey League and the Canadian Hockey Association Canadian Hockey Association supported the competition.

At the third edition of the competition participated in six teams. It was the first and only time that the Federal Republic of Germany participated in the tournament. It replaced Finland, because of fifth place at the 1983 World Championship in their own country. Canada won the tournament by two wins in the final series against Sweden. The best scorer of the tournament was Canadian Wayne Gretzky with five goals and twelve points. His teammate John Tonelli was elected Most Valuable Player.

With Peter Šťastný, Bryan Trottier and Glenn Resch denied three players competition for another national team as before. Šťastný belonged to the squad of Canada, after he had played yet for Czechoslovakia at the Canada Cup in 1976. Trottier and Resch played in the dress of the United States. Previously, Trottier had worn the jersey of Canadians at Canada Cup 1981, Resch had won the competition in 1976 with maple leaves.

The six best teams in the IIHF World Ranking internal participated in the competition.

Mode

The six teams played in the first round in a single round, the rankings from, so each team played five games. For a victory, there were two points with a tie, both teams received one point each. The four best teams in the point group of six qualified for the semifinals.

The two semi-finals were decided in the knockout system, the winners of the semi-finals moved into the finals. The final was in contrast - as in 1976 - in the mode " Best-of- Three" played out.

Awards

As a Most Valuable Player of the tournament, the Canadian winger John Tonelli was excellent. Tonelli recorded in eight tournament games three goals and eight points, which he was instrumental in the second title of Canadians. In addition, he was also appointed to the All- Star team.
