1984 NBA draft

The 1984 NBA Draft was held on June 19, 1984 in New York. Overall, there were ten rounds. The first round consisted of 24 picks. The Cleveland Cavaliers were given a further choice as compensation for the getradeten of Ted Stepien draft picks.

In the first position Hakeem Olajuwon was selected by the Houston Rockets.

The 1984 vintage is regarded as perhaps the best in the history of the NBA draft. He brought alongside Hakeem Olajuwon forth, among other things Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and John Stockton. All four played for the U.S. national basketball team (Dream Team). Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and John Stockton at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley and John Stockton took part in Atlanta at the 1996 Summer Olympics. All four were included in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Order

The 1984 Draft was the last draft before the introduction of the Draft Lottery. The first choice was drawn between the worst teams of both Conferences from the 1983/84 season. The Houston Rockets won the toss against the Indiana Pacers, who had transferred their pick of the Portland Trail Blazers. The other order was determined by the proportion of lost games in the preseason, regardless of the Conference. From the second round of the Draft percentage of games lost was exclusively decisive for the order.

A total of seven first-and second-round picks 17 were transferred to other teams because of transfer agreements in recent years.
