1984 Tournament of the Americas

The Torneo de las Américas 1984 ( english The 1984 Tournament of the Americas ) is the second edition of the Basketball America Championship and was held from 15 to 24 May 1984 at São Paulo, Brazil instead. The tournament was about qualifying for the basketball tournament at the Olympic Games in 1984. Hindsight, the tournament was inducted into the Order of America Championships and counted as a continental championship for national representative teams of men of the Continental Association FIBA Americas. Of the nine teams participating at the end of the three medal winners qualified directly for the Olympic Games. The U.S. national team was already automatically set to host the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles for the Olympic tournament and did not participate.

Participant

There was a regional qualifier in accordance with the sub-zones of the Continental Association. In addition to the two national teams of the North American sub-zone and hosts Brazil, the four top-ranked teams in the Central and South American Championships were qualified. The United States as an Olympic host and Venezuela did not participate, instead, the Dominican Republic received a starting place.

Mode

The tournament was played as a round robin tournament. The three teams placed first and foremost were the medal winners of the tournament and qualified for the Olympic Games 1984. Given the same number of victories, the direct comparison of the ranking in the squares counted.
