DFB Cup winner in 1986, FC Bayern Munich, who won 5-2 against VfB Stuttgart in the cup final on May 3, 1986. On 26 April 1986, the FC Bayern had already become German champions and could now achieve the re- double at the Olympiastadion Berlin.
Holders FC Bayer 05 Uerdingen retired from as early as the second main round after a replay against the Oberliga SV Eintracht Trier.
Since the Bavarians took part in the following season at the European Champions Cup, where they reached the final, took the losing finalist from Stuttgart in part at the European Cup Winners' Cup, but retired in the second round against the Soviet Cup winners Torpedo Moscow.
