1985 Women's European Volleyball Championship

The European Women's Volleyball in 1985 took place from 29 September to 6 October in the Netherlands instead. The Games were held in Arnhem, Beverwijk, Enschede and Leeuwarden. The Soviet Union won for the eleventh time, the title and the GDR once again took second place.

Mode

The twelve participants were divided into the first round in three groups of four. The group winners and runners-up were summarized in the final round to a group. In the mode " all against all " they determined the tournament winner. The remaining teams played to the ranks of seven to twelve. Results from teams that already clashed in the first round were incorporated into the final round.

For the Federal Republic of Germany played Gudrun Witte, Beate Bühler, Terry Place Brandel, Karen Baumeister, Constanze Wolter, Renate Riek, Andrea Sauvigny, Ute Hankers, Gabi Lorenz, Sigrid Terstegge, Danuta Niemietz and Sabine Tóth. For the GDR played Maike Arlt, Monika Beu, Grit Jensen, Ramona Landgraf, Heike Lehmann, Ariane Radfan, Ute Oldenburg, Martina Schwarz, Heike Jensen, Katlin Bonath, Petra Zendel and Dorte Stüdemann.

Qualification

The Netherlands was set as host. The top five teams in the European championship in 1983 were also automatically qualified. These were the GDR as the defending champion, the Second Soviet Union, the Third Hungary, the Fourth Bulgaria and the Federal Republic of fifth.

Six other teams reached the final on qualification tournaments, which were held in May. In Group A, who played in Mulhouse, France and Italy against Belgium, Norway and Turkey were successful. At the tournament in Group B in Viana do Castelo, the Czechoslovakia and Poland prevailed against Yugoslavia, Spain, England and Portugal. For Group C Romania and Greece qualified.
