1985 World Table Tennis Championships

The 38th World Table Tennis Championship took place from 28 March to 7 April 1985 in Gothenburg ( Sweden) in the multi-purpose hall Scandinavium instead.

Mikael Appelgren / Ulf Carlsson 's attention with final victory against the Czechoslovak player Jindřich Panský / Milan Orlowski that remained at least one title in Sweden and in Europe. All other titles went to China. Even the Swedish men's team could not use the home advantage to defeat the Chinese team.

Competition mode in the team competition

As in the previous World Cup was in two "Category 1 - groups " played with 8 teams, plus there were two " Category 2 - groups ", each with 8 teams. The teams played in Category 1 for the places 1 to 16, the teams in Category 2 for places 17 to 32

Men's team competition

In the previous World Cup 1983, the German team was relegated from Category 1. They therefore had to start from Category 2 to a group. Therefore, the best possible placement was ranked 17th

Coach was Charles Roesch. He had some discussion about are that there had been prior to the non- nomination of Peter Stellwag.

In the group matches Germany came after victories against Belgium (5-0 ), Switzerland (5:1), Pakistan ( 5:2 ), Scotland ( 5-1 ), Netherlands (5:1 ), Finland (5:0) and Norway (5-0 ) and losing to Taiwan ( 2:5 ) at No. 2 in the second round she defeated the winners of the parallel group of category 2 USSR 5-4. The " final " against Taiwan was narrowly won 5-4. Thus, the German men's team reached the optimal place 17

Women's team competition

Women's coach was Istvan Korpa. He was faced with the problem that Kirsten Kruger had canceled the participation shortly before the World Cup and Susanne Wenzel now found himself under pressure as a guide player, which they had not grown long time.

In the group matches in category 1, the team lost all games: Netherlands 0:3, 0:3 Czechoslovakia, France 1:3, 0:3 Japan, Hong Kong 0:3, 0:3 North Korea and Romania 0:3. Thus they finished last. In the second round she won something of a surprise against Yugoslavia, the penultimate of the parallel-group, 3-2. The following game to rank 13 was lost to Hong Kong with 1:3. Men's Singles

Jörg Rosskopf impressed in his first World Cup. The qualifying round he was standing when he ( did not compete the player uncovering from Ecuador ) after a bloodless victory won against the Japanese Takehiro Watanabe and the Canadian Eddi Lo. After further victories over the Americans Sean O'Neill and the Israeli Dror Pollak he was eliminated by subsequent third party Lo Chuen Tsung from Hong Kong.

Likewise, wide came Ralf Wosik. He qualified by beating Harald layer ( Austria ) and Tah Peong Seng (Malaysia ) for the main rounds. Here he won against Morten Gustavsen ( Norway) and the European champion from 1984 Ulf Bengtsson (Sweden). In the third round he lost to Chen Xinhua of China.

Engelbert Hüging failed already in the qualification to the Englishman Skylet Andrew.

Georg Böhm and Wilfried Lieck did not compete in the qualifying round. Both failed already in the 1st round, Böhm against the Finns Jarmo Jokinen and Lieck against Jindřich Panský (CSR).

Men's doubles

Engelbert Hüging teamed up with the Austrian Dietmar Palmi; he came in the doubles competition most of all Germans. In the qualifying round, they won against Cho Jong Ho / Hong Sun II (North Korea ), Alain Bourbonnais / Bao Hguyen (Canada) and the Indians Sujay Ghorpade / Chandramouli Vaidyanathan. After they mastered yet the first two rounds against Jose Maria Pales Pon / Hesham Ismail Caymel Marin (Spain) and Ivan Stojanov / Stefan Stefanov (Bulgaria). In Round 3, but they were against the Chinese Wang Huiyuan / Chen Longcan no chance.

Lieck / Wosik sat in the qualifying round against Richard by Seemiller / Brian Masters (USA) and Alan Griffiths / Mark Thomas (Wales). They survived the 1st round against the English Carl Prean / Skylet Andrew thereafter against the South Koreans Ahn Jae- hyung / Lee Jung Hak excrete.

Although Böhm / Roßkopf did not compete in the qualifying round, but they lost in Round 1 against the Swedes Stellan Bengtsson / Jonas Berner.

Women's Singles

The most, namely until the 4th round, it brought Olga Nemes. After victories against Vanja Staleva (Bulgaria), Mirjam Kloppenburg (Netherlands) and Marie Hrachová ( CSR) she was beaten by the North Korean Pang Chung Doc.

Women Doubles

All German women's doubles eliminated from the first match. Olschewski / Wenzel lost to Tomoko Shimonaga / Kitsukawa Miki (Japan), Greisinger / Nemes against Fliura Bulatowa / Raisa Timofeeva (URS ).

Mixed

Olga Nemes survived by her partner Jörgen Persson qualifying round as they won against Chandramouli Vaidyanathan / Monalisa Barua (India). But in the main round they eliminated against Xie Saike / Geng Lijuan (China). Just far came Wosik / Olschewski that enforced against Mr Maas / Carine Risch ( Luxembourg ), but then by Andrei Masunow (RUS ) / Narine Antonyan (Armenia ) were defeated. Rosskopf / Greisinger already lost in the qualifying round against Giovanni Bisi / Giorgia Zampini (Italy). Böhm / Wenzel had not in the qualifying round. In round 1 they defeated Stefan Söderberg / Monica Portin (Finland ), then against fan Changmao / Jiao Zhimin was (China) circuit.
