1987–88 SM-liiga season
The SM- liiga season 1987/88 was the 13th season of the Finnish SM- liiga. Finnish Champion became the eleventh time overall and for the seventh time since the introduction of the SM - liiga Tappara Tampere.

Regular Season
Mode
The ten teams in the SM- liiga first played in 44 regular season games against each other. The first four teams qualified for the play- offs. Due to a league run two teams in the following year, no team got off directly. The last placed SM liiga had to compete against the third-placed I- divisioona to avoid relegation and promotion, with KooKoo prevailed against Reipas Lahti. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
