Game system of team competitions

The category system used in previous World Championships will be replaced by a three - stage system. Under this system play the ladies and also the men's teams.

In the first stage 16 the groups A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, R, S can be formed. The first 16 teams in the previous World Cup in 1985 are set, each of these is a assigned to a group. The remaining teams will be drawn into the groups. In this way, groups of 4 or 5 teams.

As a result, the 16 group winners play for the places 1 to 16, the second to the positions 17 to 32, the third for places 33 to 48 and the fourth for places 49 to 64

For this purpose, in the 2nd stage 16 groups are formed according to the following scheme:

It means 1 = Winner of Group from the 1st stage, for example, R1 = Winner of group R.

Group AA: A1, H1, K1, R1                 Group BB: B1, G1, J1, S1                 Group CC: C1, F1, L1, P1                 Group DD: D1, E1, M1, N1 Second (ranked 17-32 ) It means 2 = Second Group from the 1st stage, for example, G2 = Second from Group G.

EE group: A2, G2, J2, S2                 Group FF: B2, H2, K2, R2                 GG group: C2, E2, M2, N2                 Group HH: D2, F2, L2, P2 Third parties ( space 33-48 ) It means 3 = Third Group from the 1st stage, for example, A3 = Third from Group A.

Group JJ: A3, H3, K3, R3                 Group KK: B3, G3, J3, S3                 Group LL: C3, E3, M3, N3                 Group MM: D3, F3, L3, P3 Fourth ( place 49-64 ) It means 4 = Fourth Group from the 1st stage, for example, P4 = fourth group of P.

Group NN: A4, H4, J4, R4                 Group PP: B4, G4, K4, S4                 RR group: C4, F4, L4, P4                 Group SS: D4, E4, M4, N4 3rd stage In this step, first played for a play-off system.

To Ranks 1-8 9-16 17-24 25-36            ------------------------------------------------            AA1 - DD2 AA3 - BB4 EE1 - HH2 EE3 - HH4            BB2 - CC1 CC4 - DD3 FF2 - GG1 FF4 - GG3            DD1 - CC2 CC3 - DD4 HH1 - EE2 HH3 - GG4            AA2 - AA4 BB1 - BB3 GG2 - FF1 EE4 - FF3 Here, for example, CC4 = Fourth Group CC from the 2nd stage.

Then play continues according to a modified knock-out system.

Criticism of this system

There was criticism that the pairings are fixed in the 3rd stage in advance. This allows the 2nd stage tactical strategies so that you meet in the 3rd stage on " pleasant " opponents. Tactical defeats imputed critics of the Dutch women's team in the game against the USSR and the Polish men's team against Yugoslavia.

It was therefore proposed auszulosen the pairings for the 3rd stage in the future only after the completion of the group matches of the 2nd stage.
