1988–89 Elitserien season
The Elitserien season 1988/89 was the 14th season of the Swedish Ice Hockey Elitserien. Swedish Champion was the twelfth time in club history the Djurgårdens IF, while the IF Björklöven relegation to the second division.

Regular Season
Mode
First, a main round with return match took place, in which each of the twelve teams completed 22 games. Then the two last placed in the Allsvenskan had to compete for the league against the best teams in the second division, while the other ten teams for another 18 games (both outward and return leg against any other opponent ) completed, and the results were unchanged from the previous encounters. The top eight teams qualified for the play- offs then, during the season was over for the two last placed the continuation of round. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
