1988–89 FA Cup

The FA Cup 1988/89 was the 108th edition of the competition. Defending champion was the Wimbledon FC, ​​who had beaten Liverpool in the previous year 1-0. The finals contest the teams of FC Liverpool and Everton. Everton had won the FA Cup last 1984, a 2-0 win against FC Watford. Liverpool won the coveted trophy last in 1986 in the final against Everton.

The final took place on 20 May 1989 at Wembley Stadium in front of 82,800 spectators instead and was a repeat of the final game of 1986. Three years ago, had the team of FC Liverpool goals from Ian Rush ( 2) and Craig Johnston, with a goal, enforced by Gary Lineker 3-1.

The Liverpool FC already went in the 4th minute with a goal of the Irish international's John Aldridge lead and held this score until just before the end of normal time. In the subsequent extension Ian Rush scored in the 95th minute opener for Liverpool before McCall was able to achieve the re- compensation for his team with his second goal in the 102nd minute. The second hit the Welshman Ian Rush in the 104th minute sealed the fourth Liverpool triumph in the prestigious competition.

Hillsborough disaster

The competition was overshadowed this season by the tragic events during the semi-final on 15 April 1989 by the Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield. The game was stopped after six minutes, as there had been in the block of FC Liverpool in a mass panic that ultimately led to 96 dead and 766 injured. Only after spectators climbed into panic over the fences of the block, the game in the sixth minute was stopped by the referee. (see Hillsborough disaster )

Mode

All teams in the first and second English League rise from the 3rd round in the competition. Followed each per round qualifying matches. Ends the game after regular time in a draw, a replay will take place in which the venue is changed. During another draw another game is needed.

The team from Watford FC was therefore such as in the third round forced four games to discharge against Newcastle United, before the collection was achieved in the 4th round.

The two semi-finals are always held on neutral ground, so the match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough Stadium and Old Trafford was played and the game Everton against Norwich City at Villa Park.
