1988–89 ice hockey Bundesliga season
The season 1988 /89 Hockey league was the 31st season of the German top flight. German champion of SB Rosenheim, after the previous series champion and was leading after three consecutive titles with a 1:7 home defeat in the play-off semi finals early in the first round Kölner EC against arch-rivals Düsseldorf EC. The pre-season highly touted ESV Kaufbeuren were relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga after a fourth place finish in the relegation round. The place of Kaufbeurer took the EC Hedos Munich.

Compared to previous years, the mode with a double round and subsequent championship play-offs the best eight teams, while the two last placed athlete had to compete in a relegation round against the best teams in the 2nd Bundesliga, being held.
Preliminary round
Already on the first matchday of the EV Landshut presented itself in the foot. The SB Rosenheim was defeated in the opening game 5-3, but for some Landshut players were no match approvals, so this game was rated with 0:5 for Rosenheim. A similar error afforded the Cologne EC, which began with a 8-3 success against Eintracht Frankfurt in January banned way Roger Nicholas. Again, the game was scored with 0:5.
