1988–89 NHL season

The NHL 1988/89 season was the 72th season in the National Hockey League. 21 teams each played 80 games. The Stanley Cup won by the Calgary Flames for a 4-2 victory in the final series against the Montreal Canadiens. It was Calgary's first and so far only their championship. Also succeeded in Calgary as the only team to ensure winning the title by a decisive victory in Montreal in the home of the Canadiens.

Wayne Gretzky played his move from the Edmonton Oilers in his first season with the Los Angeles Kings. Mario Lemieux missed the 200 -point mark by just one point.

Best Scorer

Best scorer was Mario Lemieux who laid the foundation for his 199 points with 85 goals. No one surpassed even with the templates Lemieuxs mark of 114, Wayne Gretzky reached this however. Also, in the majority with 31 goals and shorthanded with 13 goals Lemieux was the best. With an average of 28 percent almost every third shot by Rob Brown landed in the goal. No one shot more times than Steve Yzerman with 388 attempts on goal. The bad boy of the season was Tim Hunter with 375 penalty minutes. The most successful defender was Paul Coffey with 30 goals, 83 templates and 113 points.

Best Rookie Scorer

Best scorer among rookies, Brian Leetch, who led the scorers list with 48 templates and 71 points. Tony Granato was with 36 top scorer among the newcomers. The plus / minus rating led the Rookies Craig Janney to 20. The bad boy among the rookies was Pittsburgh's Jay Caufield with 285 penalty minutes.
