1988–89 Serie A (ice hockey) season
The 1988/89 season was the 55th season of the series A1, the highest Italian Hockey League. Master became the second overall time in club history AS Varese Hockey. SG Cortina got down to the second division.

Mode
In the main round each of the ten teams played a total of 36 games. The top eight teams qualified for the final round, which was divided into two groups of four teams. According to their main round placement were the teams for the final round of bonus points. In the final round the teams played in return match against each group opponent. The two winners of the final round groups qualified for the playoffs, where the championship was played. The last placed the main round rose directly from the second division. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
