1988 African Championships in Athletics
The 5th Africa Athletics Championships were held from August 29 to September 2, 1988 at the Stade May 19, 1956 in Annaba in Algeria instead.
Decisions were made in 23 disciplines for men and 18 for women disciplines. For women, there were no contests in the 3000 -meter steeplechase, triple jump, pole vault and hammer throw. For the 5000 m Track Walk was included in the program. The men employed in the javelin for the first time in Africa Championships, the 1986 prescribed by the IAAF competition apparatus of new design.
It was attended by 341 athletes from 30 countries participate. Amadou Dia Ba ( SEN, 400 - meter hurdles ) became the fourth consecutive time African champions, Hakim Toumi (ALG, hammer throw ) and Maria Usifo (NGR, 100 - meter hurdles ) and the Nigerian 4 x 100 -meter Season of the men each for the third time. The title defense also managed: Innocent Egbunike (NGR, 400 -meter run ), Choukri Abahnini (TUN, pole vault ) and Ahmed Mohamed Ashoush (EGY, shot put ) and the Nigerian 4 x 100 - meter relay team of women. The most successful athlete in Annaba was Yasmina Azzizi from Algeria with two gold medals in the heptathlon and javelin and a bronze medal in the 100 - meter hurdles.
