1988 Tournament of the Americas

The Torneo de las Américas 1988 ( english The 1988 Tournament of the Americas ) is the third edition of the Basketball America Championship and took place from May 22 to 31, 1988 in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo instead. The tournament was about qualifying for the basketball tournament at the Olympic Games in 1988. Hindsight, the tournament was inducted into the Order of America Championships and counted as a continental championship for national representative teams of men of the Continental Association FIBA Americas. Of the seven teams participating at the end of the three medal winners qualified directly for the Olympic Games. The reigning world champion United States was already qualified for the Olympic tournament and did not participate as well as the start legitimate national of Panama, which waived the continental finals and the chance to qualify for the Olympic Games forfeited. Another substitutes was not named, so that seven teams played for the Olympic qualifying and the tournament medals.

Participant

There was a regional qualifier in accordance with the sub-zones of the Continental Association. In addition to the two national teams of the North American sub-zone and host Uruguay, the medal winners from the Central and South American Championships were qualified. The United States and Panama as silver medalist at the Centro Basket 1997 ultimately did not participate, so that eventually remained a place in the starting field unfilled.

Mode

At the tournament a preliminary round was held as a round-robin tournament. The four teams placed first and foremost were qualified for the semifinals. The semi-final winners play a final of the tournament win while the losers of the semi-final for the bronze medal playing off the remaining qualifying spot for the Olympic Games in the " small final ".

Preliminary round

The preliminary round matches took place between 22 and 28 May 1988.

Final round

The games of the final round took place on 30 and 31 May 1988. The medalists qualified for the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.
