1989–90 Nationalliga A season

The season 1989/1990 was the 52nd regular hosting of the Swiss National League A. In the final of the play-offs, the Lugano sat against SC Bern through and thus became Swiss champion. The HC Ajoie failed in the relegation round at the league and got down in the National League B. From the NLB HC Sierre reached the rise, while the Zürcher SC in the relegation round realized in the league.

Mode

After the qualifying round of two double rounds of 18 games, take part in the ten teams, the top eight teams play the Swiss Cup from the play-offs. The teams ranked 9 and 10 of the qualifying round play along with the top four teams in the National League B the relegation round.

Qualification

The NLA qualification was mainly dominated by the SC Bern and HC Lugano, both of which reached 22 wins in 36 games and only eight times the loser left the ice. The HC Lugano secured against the SC Bern in first place in the table by goal difference. In contrast, the HC Ajoie lost 25 of his 36 league games and therefore had to play in the relegation round.

In the relegation round of the Zurich SC was able to secure a non- relegation zone, while the HC Ajoie with only three wins from ten games relegation Relegation ind the National League B. From this the HC Sierre managed with six wins from ten matches the rise in the NLA.
