1989–90 SM-liiga season
The SM- liiga season 1989/90 was the 15th season of the Finnish SM- liiga. Finnish Champion was the fourth time and for the third time since the introduction of the SM - liiga TPS Turku while KooKoo and JoKP descended to the second division.

Regular Season
Mode
The ten teams in the SM- liiga first played in 44 regular season games against each other. During the first six teams for the play- offs qualified, the two last placed athlete had to play against the two best second- division club to avoid relegation. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.

Sp = Matches, W = Wins, D = drawn, L = Loss, OTS = Overtime wins, OTN = Overtime defeat, SOS = Penalty victories, SON = Penalty defeat
Play-offs
Places 1 and 2 were qualified for the semifinals and the places 3-6 for the quarter- finals of the play-offs. The winners of those ties made it to the finals while the losers in the small final for third place played.
The quarter final was played in the mode " Best-of- Three", the semi-finals in the mode " Best-of -Five", the place match in a single playoff. The final turn found in the mode " Best-of -Seven " instead.

SM- liiga relegation
The two last placed SM- liiga the main round and the two best second division played in the mode " Best-of -Five" for promotion or relegation. Both KooKoo, and JoKP lost their relegation duel and descended to the second division.
