1989–90 Soviet League season

The 1989/90 season the league Wysschaja was the 44th season of the highest Soviet Hockey League. The Soviet league title secured for the third time Dynamo Moscow, while Dinamo Kharkiv relegation to the second division.

Mode

The 16 teams in the league Wysschaja first played in a common main round in return game against any opponent, bringing the total number of games per team was 30.

Then the ten best teams in the main round played in the finals again in return game against any opponent, while the results were taken from the main round and the point best team in the final round was a Soviet champion.

The six last placed the main round met in the relegation to the four best second division. All teams contested in the relegation each 36 games. The five top-ranked teams played in the following season in the league Wysschaja, the other five teams in the second-rate Perwaja league.

For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
