1989 FIFA Futsal World Championship

The first FIFA Futsal World Championship was held between 5 and 15 January 1989 in The Netherlands. World champion Brazil, the hosts defeated the Netherlands 2-1 in the final.

Hosts and venues

The Netherlands was chosen to host the first World Cup Hall under the auspices of FIFA. The Dutch football association KNVB celebrated in 1989 its 100th anniversary, also the Netherlands were about 100,000 active indoor soccer as one of the strongholds of the fledgling sport.

As host cities to Rotterdam, Arnhem, Amsterdam, 's- Hertogenbosch and Leeuwarden were determined. At all five venues, there was a traditionally high interest in football.

  • The Sportpaleis Ahoy in Rotterdam served as the venue for the opening matches of the tournament. Furthermore found six games of the second round and the final round held in the up to 7,000 -seat hall.
  • In Arnhem, the Rijnhal served as the venue. Four preliminary rounds and six intermediate round matches were held in the hall built in the 1970s. Up to 6,500 spectators were able to attend the games.
  • The Centre can Maaspoort in 's- Hertogenbosch was the site of six preliminary round games. The hall opened in 1982, offering up to 3,500 spectators.
  • In Amsterdam six preliminary round games were played in front of more than 3,500 spectators Sporthal Zuid.
  • The Frieslandhal in Leeuwarden has hosted six group games. The Hall summed up to 4,000 visitors.

Participant

All 16 participating nations were invited by the organizers. In addition to hosts Netherlands participated in five more teams from Europe, South America introduced three participants. From Africa, Asia and CONCACAF ever two teams invited from Oceania Australia participated.

For some nations, the World Cup was in 1989 so far (as of 2008) only World Cup. Algeria, Denmark and Saudi Arabia led discontinued after their futsal team World Cup, Zimbabwe and Canada reported only for one of the following five World Cup qualifications a team.

Top favorite Brazil had at the start in Group B startup problems. Sensational Brazil had lost to Hungary with 2:3. Only after the defeat of the Express came into the aisles, they beat Saudi Arabia 8-0 and Spain 4-1. In the second group phase, they overran Paraguay 5-1 and gained a 6-3 win against Argentina. Brazil played only to win the group against the United States who have had also two wins on the account. Surprisingly conceded the Brazilians their second defeat in the tournament with a 5-3 victory, the U.S. team group winners. In the semifinals, the South Americans played against Belgium, who could beat the hosts in their group. After extra time was 3-3 against Belgium. Now the on penalties had to decide which won the South Americans 5-3. In the final they met the host Netherlands before 4,200 spectators. Benatti opened the scoring at the start for Brazil, the Dutch by Loosveld the equalizer. However, in 46 minutes scored Raul 2-1 lead, which they no longer charges. Brazil became the first futsal world champion.

Awards

With the Golden Ball for the best player of the tournament, the Dutchman Victor Herman was excellent. A Silver or Bronze Ball were not awarded. As top scorer of the tournament, the Hungarian Laszlo Zsadany received (7 goals) Golden Boot. The Fair Play Award won the team of the United States. In Technical Report of the Belgian Johan Lamotte is still recognized as the best goalkeeper and an All- Star team.
