1989 Tournament of the Americas

The Torneo de las Américas 1989 ( english The 1989 Tournament of the Americas ) is the fourth edition of the Basketball America Championship and took place from June 8 to 18, 1989 in the Mexican capital Mexico City instead. In the tournament, which had previously been held three times only as a qualification for the respective Olympic Games, it was the first time to qualify for the World Cup finals, in this case for the Basketball World Championship 1990. Afterwards the tournament was in the series of added America Championships and counted as a continental championship for national representative teams of men of the Continental Association FIBA Americas. Of the twelve participating teams, the four participants in the semi-final and the winner of the Placement Round qualified directly for the World Championships. Since Argentina was already qualified as host of the World Cup finals for the World Championships, would have yet another team the opportunity to qualify, if Argentina had reached one of the five qualifying spots. In this case, both finalists of the Placement Round would have been qualified.

Participant

Regional qualification according to the sub-zones of the Continental Association. In addition to the two national teams of the North American subzone took the five top-ranked of the Central and South American Championships, which was also the host of Mexico as a semi-finalist of the Centro Basket 1989. Mode

At the tournament in a preliminary round was held two groups of five teams as a round-robin tournament. The two lowest-ranked teams in the first round and then eliminated from the tournament, while the other teams continued to play in the knockout system. The pairings for the quarterfinals were crossing determined by the positions of the first round. While the four winners of the quarter-finals were directly qualified for the world championships and medals playing off each other, played the losers of the quarter- finals of a fifth participant in the World Cup. In the event that the World Cup finals hosts Argentina would have been among the five winners, even the loser of the final match of the placement round for the World Cup finals would have been qualified in 1990.

Final round

The games of the final round were played in the knockout system between the 14th and 18th June 1989. The winners of the games in the quarterfinals were directly qualified for the World Championships and then played the medals. The losers of the games in the quarterfinals played in a placement round to the other placements. Upon reaching the medal round by the team of Argentina and the loser of the final match of the Placement Round was sixth of the tournament another spot at the World Cup.
