1989 World Table Tennis Championships

The 40th World Table Tennis Championship was held until April 9, 1989 in Dortmund ( Germany ) on 29 March. It was played in the Westfalenhalle.

General

With four world championships in succession, the Chinese men's team won the gold medal. In Dortmund tore this series before 12,000 enthusiastic spectators. The Swedish team ( Jörgen Persson, Mikael Appelgren, Jan- Ove Waldner ) was cheered as if it were the German and gained sovereign 5-0 the World Cup.

The young German men's team fought his way to a 7th place.

In the men's singles favored by the team games Jörgen Persson his compatriot Jan- Ove Waldner had to let go first. China went blank from here.

In a thrilling finale, the German " youngster " Jörg Rosskopf / Steffen Fetzner won the sellout Westfalenhalle the World Cup in men's doubles. It was the first title for the Federal Republic after the Second World War.

The Chinese men won no gold medal. In contrast, the women proved to be superior by obsolete gold with the team in singles and in doubles.

Game system of team competitions

The teams played in the same three-stage system as 1987 (see World Cup 1987).

In the men were 69 teams at, in the women's 55 teams.

Cutting off the Germans

Men's team competition

In stage 1, it had Germany in Group G to do with Brazil, Malaysia and Iceland. All three opponents were defeated each without losing a set 5-0.

In stage 2, Germany joined in Group AA along with China, Hungary and Belgium. Surprisingly, the first game against the outsider Belgium was lost with 2:5. The following 2:5 defeat to China was taken into account. Since Hungary against Belgium won 5-3 parallel nor gave yourself a chance to reach 2nd place: The team had to win against Hungary at least 5:1 ( and Belgium against China lose ) in order to achieve the best score at 1:2 of equality. This was achieved: Man defeated Hungary 5-1 and qualified for the classification matches to rank 1-8 in stage 3

Here Germany met the eventual champions Sweden and lost without the diseased Georg Böhm 2:5; thereby convinced " substitute " Peter Franz with a victory over Mikael Appelgren. There was a 4:5 defeat against Japan. In the final match for 7th place they beat Poland 5-2.

Women's team competition

For the first time Olga Nemes joined with the German team. ( In 1985, she was eligible to play only in the individual competitions, 1987 she was injured. )

In stage 1, group P Germany won 3-0 against Turkey and lost with 1-3 against Bulgaria. This was only enough to place 2 and thus to play for the places 17 to 32

Here, the women's team placed in group HH against Austria (3:0 ), Malaysia ( 3-0) and Italy (3:1) by reaching level 3 Here it passed by a 3-1 win against Poland, a 2:3 against France and a 3-0 win over Austria Rank 19

Men's Singles

Georg Böhm lost in the first match against Olivier Marmurek (France). Steffen Fetzner had immediately against the bronze medalist Yu Shentong (China) take and was there no chance. Hans- Jürgen Fischer won easily against Kurt Jost ( Liechtenstein ), Umesh de Alwis (Sri Lanka), Emad Kaldi (Jordan) and Hussian Aziz (Iraq), then failed but among the last 64 at the Sweden Mikael Appelgren. Peter Franz survived without problems, the qualifying round, but then he was defeated, the Hungarian Zsolt Harczi. Helmut coarse retired after victories over Somosi Miklos (Hungary) and Musaddequl Haque ( Bangladesh) against Taiwan's top player Wu Wen- Chia. Jürgen Rebel failed already in the first round of the Dutchman Gerard Bakker. Jörg Rosskopf switched from Vladimir Marinkevitch (USSR) and Tomas Janci (CSSR ), but was Andrzej Grubba of (Poland ) defeated. Ralf Wosik the Korean Kim Ki- voltaic was randomly assigned, who won the 1988 Olympic Games silver. Against this Wosik was no chance. His brother Torben Wosik had no problems in the qualifying round. Then he dominated Jindřich Panský (CSSR ) 3-0 and lost narrowly to Carl Prean ( GB).

Women's Singles

Ilka Böhning already retired from the qualifying round: Against Pia Toelhoj (Denmark) they missed a 19:8 lead in the third set. Jin- Sook Cords won against Peggy rainy weather ( Luxembourg ) and failed then to Hu Xiaoxin (China). Cornelia Faltermaier switched from Caroline Sylvestre (Canada) and Carla Angela Tiberio (Brazil), but then lost to the Chinese Lin Li -Zu (TPE). Andrea songs succumbed after their victory against Hong Kit Lp (Macau ) of the Canadian Julie Barton. Olga Nemes disappointed and did not continue to Alison Gordon ( England). Katja Nolten defeated Mee Wan Teong (Malaysia), was then but against Wang Xiaoming (France) without a chance. Nicole Struse convinced: In qualifying, she won easily against Ewa Brzezinska - Janik (Poland), Patricia Aubry (France) and Sophie Thirion (Belgium ), but the Dutch Mirjam Kloppenburg was too strong. Christiane Praedel defeated Elke Billen (Belgium) and Wendy Hughes ( Australia ), but at the Hungarian Gabriella Wirth she did not come over.

Men's doubles

The most successful was of course the World Cup double Roßkopf / Fetzner, successively Zsolt Kriston / Miklos Somosi (Hungary ), Juzo Nukazuka / Yoji Matsushita (Japan), Ulf Carlsson / Ulf Bengtsson (Sweden), Andrzej Grubba / Jean -Philippe Gatien (Poland / France), Chen Longcan / Quingguang Wei (China) and Zoran Kalinic / Kucharski Leszek (Yugoslavia / Poland) ausschaltete.

Rebel / Coarse sat in the qualifying round against three opponents by, but then lost against the French Patrick Renversé / Olivier Marmurek. For Böhm / Franz after beating Bart van Haren / Adel Massaad ( Netherlands / Egypt), the Korean double Kim Jae- hyung was Ki-taik/Ahn terminus. The brothers R.Wosik / T.Wosik documents after two victories in the qualifying round of the Sweden Peter Karlsson / Thomas von Scheele.

Fischer played along with Milan Grman (CSSR ). They beat the Luxembourg Yves Maas / Daniel Winter Dorff and Vladimir Dvorak / Slobodan Grujic (URS / Yugoslavia) and then lost against the English Desmond Douglas / Skylet Andrew.

Women Doubles

As the only German double Nolten / Böhning scored a victory against the rotation Schottinen Carole Dalrymple / Sarah Hurry, after which it was eliminated by Csilla Bátorfi / Edit Urbán (Hungary). All other double lost their first game: Nemes / Struse against Valentina Popova / Galina Melnik (URS ) Cords / Faltermaier against Gerdie Keen / Sonja Rasmussen ( Netherlands / Norway) and songs / Praedel against Pia Toelhoj / Anna Karina Bastman (Denmark).

Mixed

The most came Torben Wosik / Struse: After two wins in the qualifiers they sat against Dennis Makaling / Wendy Hughes ( Australia) and Roar Blikken / Lill Kristin Wennberg (Norway ) by. In the 3.Hauptrunde they lost Henk van Spanje / Mirjam Kloppenburg (Netherlands). Fetzner / Nemes reached thanks to a victory over Rinku Gupta / M.Mehta (India) the 2.Hauptrunde, where they did against Ulf Bengtsson / Marie Svensson ( Sweden). Similarly far came Roßkopf / Nolten after a 2-0 win against Peter Stuart Jackson / Maxine Joan Goldie (New Zealand), the Chinese Teng Yi / Jun Hui were the last stop. Also, the 2 main round reached Rebel / Faltermaier, who won twice in qualifying, then the Indonesians Tjie Haryono Wong / Rossy Syehbubakar beat and then Gideon Joe Ng / Julie Barton (Canada) failed. The remaining German pairings already eliminated from the 1.Hauptrunde: Böhm / Cords against Shigeo Itoh / Yukino Matsumoto (Japan ), Franz / Böhning after survive the qualification against Miroslav Čečava / Miluse Kocova (CSSR ), coarse / Songs after qualifying against Samvel Vardanjan / Irina Palina (URS ) and Fischer / Praedel by qualification against Zoran Kalinic / Gordana Perkučin (Yugoslavia).

ITTF Congress

The ITTF Congress passed the following resolutions:

  • The associations of Guam, Liechtenstein, Dominica and the Marshall Islands were included as ITTF members.
  • For the next World Cup, a modified system for the team competition of the men has been set.

Nancy Evans ( Wales) and Amin Abou heif (Egypt) ended their functionary employees in the ITTF.

  • Ralf Wosik resigned after the World Cup of the national team.
  • Charles Roesch ended his activity as head coach of the DTTB after the World Cup. He was succeeded by Eva Jeler.
  • Daniele Ceccoli (San Marino) was 13 years old (born 4 April 1976) of the hitherto youngest participants in a World Cup.
  • The teams of Pakistan and India refused to play against the team of Israel.
  • The French Wang Xiaoming received from the SCI Richard Bergmann Fair Play Award.
  • The Swede Jörgen Persson and the Chinese Hong Qiao received the Victor Barna Price from SCI.
  • The German Federal Post Office issued a postage stamp ( Michel catalog No 1408 ) to the World Cup. In the special post office in the Westfalenhalle a special was from March 29 to April 9, 1989 used.
  • The DTTB was on the occasion of this World Cup, the music of the opening ceremony of " Magic Ball " as a vinyl single out. The music was also played before award ceremonies.
  • For the first time a World Cup draw was carried out with the aid of a computer program. Had developed the software Michael Theis ( Germany ).
