1990–91 AHL season
The season 1990/91 was the 55th regular season of the American Hockey League ( AHL ). During the regular season, the 15 teams played 80 matches each. The four best teams in the North Division and the South Division then played in a play-off round to the Calder Cup.

Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Binghamton Whalers were sold and played from then on under the name of Binghamton Rangers
- The Sherbrooke Canadiens were to Fredericton, New Brunswick, relocated and played from then on under the name of Fredericton Canadiens

Calder Cup Playoffs
Mode
For the playoffs, the four teams from each division qualified. While the top three teams in each division were automatically qualified for the Division semifinals, the teams fourth participant of the respective division played on the fourth and fifth of the pre- playoffs.
The pre- playoffs were played in home and away matches, but the team is qualified with more goals scored for the division semifinals. In the first two play-off rounds, the winner of each division were played. In round three, the two division winners to the finals. All play-off rounds, and the final was played in best- of-seven mode.
