The Fotbollsallsvenskan 1990 was the 66th season in the highest Swedish football league Fotbollsallsvenskan. Starting this season, the scoring is reversed: Henceforth there was a victory for three instead of two points for a draw still a point.

Course of the season

The supervised by Roger Gustafsson team IFK Göteborg finished by the end of the regular season in first place and moved to the subsequent final round to the final, where last year's champion IFK Norrköping was dethroned in return game. The team led by Magnus Johansson, Magnus Johansson, Thomas Ravelli, Stefan Rehn and Peter Eriksson was started with a 0:6 away defeat at Norrköping Club in the season, but could not last because of the strength at home - was the only club in the league IFK Gothenburg without a home defeat - outperform the competition during the season. Behind the two clubs for a long time Örebro SK, Östers IF and Djurgårdens IF provided a three-way battle for the final two places in the final. After Djurgårdens IF long time in the race was good especially because of goal difference, the club from Stockholm managed just one win in their last five games, so that Örebro SK and Östers IF qualified for the finals.

At the back table area Hammarby IF and Örgryte IS stood firm prematurely as two of the three relegated. While Hammarby IF with only five wins this season, missed the league without an away victory, Örgryte IS rose particular as heimschwächste team from only eight won on own ground points. Before that, IK Brage and Halmstad BK delivered a duel for the league. On fourth- last game Halmstad BK jumped after a 3-0 home win over GAIS on the last non- relegation zone, the team was able to hold out until the end of the season. Even a 4-2 win against AIK on the final day helped IK Brage not for relegation, as parallel Halmstad BK in turn Hammarby IF struck with a 4-3 victory.

Since the mode was changed the following year, in which a spring series was introduced in their connection to league form in a championship or relegation round the decisions has been played, the association decided to reduce the number of teams to ten teams. Therefore, it was with GIF Sundsvall only a second-division promoted at the end of the year.
