In Asia, Europe, Oceania and South America, it came to qualifying matches, the African representatives of Nigeria and the two participants of the CONCACAF, Costa Rica and the United States were invited by FIFA to the tournament. Hosts Hong Kong was also automatically qualified.

From Asia, the People's Republic of China qualified ( against Japan and Thailand) and Iran ( against Oman and Kuwait), in the Oceania region, Australia sat against New Zealand and Vanuatu by. In South America, only four teams competed for the three available seats. Ultimately failed Ecuador. In Europe there were two qualifying groups with five teams, each of which first three qualified. It initially set by the Yugoslav team, but this was excluded by adopted by the United Nations resolutions, as with the European Football Championship in 1992 or later from the Olympic Winter Games. For Yugoslavia Belgium moved by.

Mode

The mode remained unchanged compared to the 1989 World Series. The 16 teams played in the first four preliminary round groups of four teams. Within each group, each team played against each other team. The two best group of each group qualified for the second group stage, in which the eight teams again in two groups of four (two each preliminary round winner and two first round second per group) were distributed and again fought out against any team a game. The top two in each group qualified for the semi-finals, the teams fought out in the knockout system. Case of a tie during the group stage goal difference over the placement decision.

Preliminary round

The draw took place on 12 June 1992 held in Hong Kong, it was still Yugoslavia in Lostopf, which were later replaced by Belgium. Whether a set list existed and if so by what criteria it has been set, could not be elicited so far, sure seems that Hong Kong was set as group head of the group A, the other group heads were the Netherlands, Brazil and the People's Republic of China.

Group A

In Group A, Argentina and Poland prevailed. In all four countries Futsal was at the time largely unknown, and the group turned out to be in the second round, as the weakest preliminary group, as both Argentina and Poland were eliminated as a group last. While it was at least already used in Poland and Argentina on the amateur level indoor football, were created in Hong Kong and Nigeria only for the tournament structures. The departure of the host could also coach Vic Hermans, who was honored at the 1989 World Cup Golden Ball, not prevent it.

Group B

In group B, the Iranian team surprised the competition. Even before the incumbent vice world champion Netherlands could qualify for the second round, even though it was the only country in the group that was only incidentally operated in the futsal tournament up to the beginning of some footballers. The team of the Netherlands prevailed as expected, the results were extremely scarce. For Italy and Paraguay, the tournament was over after the first round.

Group C

The group C was expected to be dominated by Brazil. With a goal difference of 23:1 and three wins in three games, sat down by sovereign. In the second place, it abolished the Nachrrückerteam from Belgium, through a narrow victory over Australia.

Group D

Knapp went to in Group D. Ultimately favorites Spain and the United States prevailed, Russia lacked in the final game against Spain a hit to get ahead. For China, whose team consisted of ordinary footballers, remained only a minor role in this group.

Second round

Group E

In group E, tournament favorite and the United States prevailed over runner-up Netherlands and Argentina. The U.S. succeeded in a surprising draw against Brazil and another draw in the preliminary decision to end the game semi-final against the Netherlands. Argentina did not play any role in this group.

Group F

In Group F World Cup tournament favorites Spain met the underdog teams from Belgium, Poland and Iran. The Iranian team was surprised again and beat even the Spaniards 4-2. The other two group matches were successfully carried out. Spain was achieved despite the surprising defeat a second group of sovereign move into the semi-finals.

Final round

Semifinal

In the semifinals, the Iranian team defeated the United States with 2:4. The Iranian team had the tournament up to this match contested with a strain of only six field players while everyone else for the most part seven to nine fielders inserting per game. The Iranian players were the rigors of six previous games to remember what eventually led that the U.S. was able to prevail in the second half.

Title favorites Brazil won against the strongest competitors on the paper from Spain 4-1 by as early as 1989 and could be in the final. The game had already been decided at halftime, as Brazil led 3-0.

3rd Place Match

In the match for 3rd place ensured the two teams for one of the highest-scoring games of the tournament. Ultimately, the Spanish team took revenge for the defeat in the second group stage and took the bronze medal.

Final

In the final of the snicker 's Trophy, named after a candy bar of the main sponsor of the event Mars Inc., to Brazil prevailed again. The game was long and open at the beginning of the second half succeeded the Americans of compensation. A short time later, however, the Brazilians were able to hit from Jorginho and Captain Vander within one minute of play out a two -goal lead and defend it until the end.

Top scorers

Awards

With the Golden Ball for the best player of the tournament, the Brazilian Jorginho was excellent, however, does not appear in the All- Star team of the Technical Report. A Silver or Bronze Ball were not awarded. As top scorer of the tournament the Iranian Saeid Rajabi Shirazi was awarded the Golden Boot. The Fair Play Award won the team of the United States.

Conclusion

Between the participating associations prevailed striking differences in the importance of Futsal in their own country. While Futsal in Brazil, Spain, the Netherlands and the United States is very popular, the sport only a fringe sport was mostly or entirely new to the remaining participating nations. Therefore, it in no way surprised that three of the four semi-finalists came from the strongholds of indoor soccer. Iran rose to the surprise team of the tournament and finished at the end of fourth rank was positively emphasized also the significantly higher level of fun compared to the 1989 World Series, which saw to it that the goal average increased considerably.

Hong Kong has been praised as a host for the good Accommodation for athletes, the supply, transport and technical infrastructure. Was subject to criticism for the hall floor, on the non- optimally the ball rolled and the often low attendances.

The Technical Report has suggested the Auszeitoption on the coach to reallocate ( during the tournament had this be requested by the captain ), the number of nominated players of 12 should be increased to 14 and change the size of the ball from 4 to 3 ( a commercial football has size 5). The use of regular football referees were criticized, because they could not adapt within the short time the special rules of futsal.

In Germany, the tournament was perceived only in passing. The journal kicker reported under the heading " telegrams " in short form about the events after the final product was a small "international football " in the field published.
