1992 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships

The 56th Ice Hockey World Men Championships in 1992 were held at the following locations and dates:

A total of 32 teams took part in these World Championships, which set a new record showed.

There was in this year, a variety of changes. So was the first time since 1976, again a world championship in an Olympic year instead. The reason for this was mainly based on financial considerations of the IIHF, who promised so more revenue. Furthermore, the A- group first played with 12 teams. Also for this increase financial reasons were primarily responsible; you wanted in this way prevent a descent of the German team, as the German advertising market is one of the most financially powerful. The increase required a new mode: After a preliminary round in two groups of six teams each group, the top four reach the quarter-finals and play in the single elimination the world champion. The two last placed each group determine the relegated in a direct duel. For the fifth-placed the World Cup after the first round ended. The final placement of the eliminated in the quarterfinals football teams and the two fifth-placed is calculated according to the performance in the previous round. Also new was that this year was no European Championship. The existing since 1910 tradition of a European continental championship, the ( previously in 1928, 1930 and 1931 ) was not played in a separate tournament, but in the context of the World Cup games at least since 1933, took place with the 1991 Ice Hockey World Championships come to an end.

Innovations have been in the area of the C group. One goal of the A group increase it had been, in the C group to make room for other teams in the waiting list. But this year reported an extraordinary number of teams. With Israel, Luxembourg, Greece and Turkey took four World Cup newcomers in part; added were going to South Africa, which occurred for the first time since the sixties again at the World Championships. Thus, the IIHF decided to introduce the D group again. However, it received a new name and now called a C2 - group, while the classic C group now received the name of C1 group. Both groups played with six teams. In the C1 group that played five teams in last year played in the C group and were not risen; plus came Australia. In the C2 group played four World Cup newcomers as well as South Africa and Spain.

The dramatic political changes in Eastern Europe also had an impact on this World Ice Hockey Championships. In autumn 1991 the old Soviet Union had disintegrated into 12 constituent states. Earlier, the three Baltic States had already replaced. As the legal successor of the USSR in particular was the Russian Federation, also sporting the place of the Soviet Union occupied at the Ice Hockey World Championships in the A group. Those successor states, where good hockey was played also in some cases, but should get a chance until the next World Cup, to intervene in the action.

Sweden successfully defended his title and became the sixth time world champion. After a fairly weak preliminary competition, Sweden increased from the quarter- finals and defeated in the final archrival Finland 5-2. For the Finns, this was the first World Cup medal. A disappointment experienced both the new Russian team as well as Canada, both of which failed in the quarterfinals and No. 5 or No. 8 their worst World Cup rankings achieved at all. The Switzerland reached 4th place with the best ranking since 1953.
