1992 Tournament of the Americas
The Torneo de las Américas 1992 ( english The 1992 Tournament of the Americas ) is the fifth edition of the America Basketball Championship and took place from June 27 to July 5, 1992 at Memorial Coliseum from Portland ( Oregon). The tournament was about qualifying for the basketball tournament at the Olympic Games in 1992. Retrospect, the tournament was inducted into the Order of America Championships and counted as a continental championship for national representative teams of men of the Continental Association FIBA Americas. Of the ten participating teams, the four semi-finalists qualified directly for the Olympic Games. It was the first appearance in an official competition of the so -called " Dream Team ", in which the choice of the United States was first formed up on a player only active NBA professionals as well as for the HIV infection otherwise inactive Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, who ended his career after the Olympics. The team showed extremely dominant and won, as well as the later Olympic tournament, all matches with a distance of at least 38 points basket. How many players of this team, the selection has been added themselves as a team later in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame individually.

Mode
At the tournament in a preliminary round was held two groups of five teams as a round-robin tournament. The two lowest-ranked teams in each preliminary round group then eliminated from the tournament, while the other teams continued to play in the knockout system. While the top ranked team of each preliminary round group were already directly qualified for the semi-finals and the Olympic Games, while the second and third placed teams of each preliminary round group, the other two semi-finalists and participants played crosswise in a playoff game at the Olympic Games from. Then the medals of the tournament was played among the participants in the Olympic Games yet.
