Mode and prehistory

There was also this year again changes. This was the reaction of the IIHF on the changing political landscape in Eastern Europe. Already in the previous year, a Russian team had taken the place of the old Soviet Union. This year, now urged a part of the successor states in the World Cup events. Even Yugoslavia was now divided into constituent states; but was this process from less peaceful than the breakup of the USSR. This had two consequences. On the one hand there was with Slovenia and Croatia, two new hockey nations who wished to participate in the World Championships, on the other hand was rump Yugoslavia, consisting of the old republics of Serbia and Montenegro, because of its driving role in the civil wars in these regions with boycotts, also with sporty, occupied and was not allowed to participate in the C- WM. The IIHF therefore felt compelled to extensive changes in the C- group area. Thus, the C1 group was increased from 6 to 12 teams and back to pure C group. The new group was made up of the five teams in the C1 group of the previous year ( without B- group promoted the UK and without the space occupied by boycotts B groups relegated Yugoslavia), the top two finishers of the C2 group (where the C2 group Second South Africa for the expelled Yugoslavia nachrückte ) and five qualifiers together. Taking place in autumn 1993 qualifying was held in four groups, with the four group winners qualified for the C- WM: this was added as the fifth qualifier of the group in two of the most powerful group, which consisted of the CIS countries. Participants of this qualification, the four remaining teams in the C2 group of the previous year, as well as eight new countries, all successor states of the USSR and Yugoslavia.

Some minor changes were also in the A group. So at this World Cup also had the two group Fifth the preliminary round with the play- downs against relegation. In addition, the team of Czechoslovakia was replaced by a purely Czech team, because on 1 January 1993, Czechoslovakia also had dissolved in the constituent states Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Place play- 9

It was originally planned to host the C- Cup in the same form in the coming year. Here qualifiers were provided in advance. The two last placed of the two groups should participate in these qualifiers. The third last of the tournament should also qualify, provided that the boycott of Yugoslavia would be repealed and should play the country back in the C group. Therefore, a game has been specifically designed to take place 9. However, these plans were discarded afterwards. The C group was decided back in the C1 and the C2 group split. These increased the last three of the two preliminary round groups in the C2 group, while the new national team of Slovakia and the team of Belarus were assigned in the C1 group by Wildcard a place. They wanted taking into account the skill level of both teams.
