1993 Tournament of the Americas

The Torneo de las Américas 1993 ( english The 1993 Tournament of the Americas ) is the sixth edition of the America Basketball Championship and was held from 28 August to 5 September 1993 in Puerto Rican capital of San Juan instead. The tournament was about to qualify for the FIBA World Championship in 1994. Afterwards the tournament was added to the series of America Championships and counted as a continental championship for national representative teams of men of the Continental Association FIBA Americas. Of the ten participating teams, the four participants in the semi-final qualified directly for the World Championships. Since the United States had already qualified as Olympic champion for the world championships, had yet another team the opportunity to qualify, provided that the United States reached the semi-finals. In this case, decided in the placement round of the game for 5th place on the last spot for the World Cup.

Regional qualification according to the sub-zones of the Continental Association. In addition to the two national teams of the North American sub-zone, the four semi-finalists of the Central and South American Championships, which also hosts the Puerto Rico was the winner of the Centro Basket 1993.

Mode

At the tournament in a preliminary round was held two groups of five teams as a round-robin tournament. The two lowest-ranked teams in the first round and then eliminated from the tournament, while the other teams continued to play in the knockout system. The pairings for the quarterfinals were crossing determined by the positions of the first round. While the four winners of the quarter-finals were directly qualified for the world championships and medals playing off each other, played the losers of the quarter- finals of a fifth participant in the World Cup, where the United States reached the semifinals of the medal round. In this case, the winner of the Placement Round was awarded another spot at the World Cup 1994.

Final round

The games of the final round were played in the knockout system. The winners of the games in the quarterfinals were directly qualified for the World Championships and then played the medals. The losers of the games in the quarterfinals played in a placement round to the other placements. Upon reaching the medal round by the crew of the United States, the winner of the Placement Round got fifth in the tournament another spot at the World Cup.
