1995–96 Heineken Cup

The Heineken Cup 1995/96 was the first edition of the Heineken Cup, the main European cup competition in rugby union. It involved twelve teams from France, Ireland, Italy, Wales and (so far the only time ) Romania. Teams from England and Scotland had received from their associations scheduling reasons not allowed to start. The finals took place at Cardiff Arms Park on January 6, 1996. First Cup winner was the French club Stade Toulousain, of the Cardiff RFC beat in the final.

Mode

The participants were divided into four groups of three teams. Each team met only once on one of the two opponents in the group, so that there was in each case a home game and an away game. For the semi-finals, the four group winners qualified.

The points are distributed as follows:

  • 2 points for a win
  • 1 point for a draw
