1996–97 AHL season
The 1996/97 season was the 61st regular season of the American Hockey League ( AHL ). During the regular season, 18 teams played 80 matches each. Each of the eight best teams in the Eastern Conference and Western Conference then played in a play-off round to the Calder Cup.

Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Prince Edward Iceland senator stopped the game operation and were inactive.
- The Cornwall Aces stopped the game operation and were inactive.
- The Cape Breton Oilers to Hamilton, Ontario, relocated and played from now on under the name Hamilton Bulldogs
- The Kentucky Thoroughblades were added as an expansion team in the league.
- The Philadelphia Phantoms were added as an expansion team in the league.

Calder Cup Playoffs
Mode
For the playoffs qualified in the Northern Conference and Southern Conference each of the eight best teams. While in the Southern Conference in each case the top four teams in each division qualified, was located in the Northern Conference of the Fifth Division of the Empire State, the Binghamton Rangers qualify, because they had more points than the Fourth Canadian Division, the Fredericton Canadiens.
In the first three playoff rounds, the winner of the Eastern or Western Division were played, which then clashed in the final of the Calder Cup. While the first playoff round in the best- of-five - mode has been played, all other playoff rounds and finals for the Best -of -Seven mode were played.
