1996–97 Czech Extraliga season

The season 1996/97 was the fourth regular hosting of the Czech Extraliga. In the play-off final, last year's winner HC Petra Vsetín sat through 3-0 against HC Vitkovice. In the first league of the Czech Republic HC Kralupy nad Vltavou and HC Becherovka Karlovy Vary occupied the first two places, however, succeeded neither in the Extraliga relegation of sporting rise in the Extraliga.

Mode

In 52 games, all teams will play two complete double rounds, so each team has 26 each home and away games. The teams ranked 1-8 qualify directly for the play-offs, which will be played in best-of -five mode. For the teams ranked 9-12, the season is over after the main round. At the end of the season takes place next to the playoffs instead of a relegation round, where the two last-place teams in the Extraliga and the winner of the play-off semi-finals the first league to participate. In the mode best- of-seven with a maximum of seven games per team, the two climbers are determined in the Extraliga or relegated to the first division.

The crew of the HC Petra Vsetín, who won the Czech championship already in the two years before, sat down against HC Vitkovice 3-0 through and won the third title of the club's history. Expulsion

This Dukla Jihlava and HC Opava remain in the Extraliga, while the HC Kralupy nad Vltavou and the HC Becherovka Karlovy Vary to play in the first league. Later, the HC Olomouc sold his Extraliga license to Karlovy Vary, so that the crew of the Carlsbad still climb.
