1996–97 DEL season

The DEL 1996/97 season was the third season of the German Ice Hockey League. German masters were the Adler Mannheim, during the play- downs loser Ratingen Lions and Wedemark Scorpions were able to keep the class in the relegation round against EHC Neuwied and the TSV Erding.

Mode and rules

The game was initially a single round of 30 games per team. Then the teams played in the squares one through six, a master craftsman and the Seventh to 16th a Relegation Round of 16 The matches to the champion round were it played as a double round, while the relegation round was played as a single round. The first two teams in the Relegation Round qualified for the play-off places seven and eight qualified in the Champions round was fought only for the top spot. The remaining teams in the champions round played in the play- downs from the two teams that had to play against the best teams in the first league to avoid relegation.

The first six teams qualified for the Masters round, the remaining teams had in the play-offs.

All play-off rounds were played in the " Best of Five" mode, where the first-named team in the first, third and optionally fifth game had home advantage.

In order for the Adler Mannheim was the second time in their history German masters.

1st round

The first play -down round was played in the " Best of Seven" mode.

2nd round

The first play -down round was played in the " Best of Five" mode.

This Wedemark Ratingen and had to play against the two winners of the play-offs of the first leagues to avoid relegation in the relegation.

Expulsion

The relegation round was played in the mode " Best of Three".

This Wedemark and Ratingen remained in the DEL.
