1996–97 Eliteserien (Denmark) season
The 1996/97 season was the 12th season of the Elite series, the highest Danish Hockey League. Master became the total eighth time in the club's history of Herning IK.
Mode
In the main round each of the ten teams played a total of 27 games. The top six teams qualified for the final round. The remaining four teams had to play in the relegation round along with the four best second division. The top two teams in the relegation round qualified as well as the six teams in the final round of the playoffs, in which the championship was played. The four last placed the relegation round had to compete in the following season in the second division. According to their main round placement, the participants in the relegation round between zero and three bonus points received. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
