The Elitserien season 1996/97 was the 22nd season of the Swedish Elitserien. Swedish champion for the fourth time in their history the Färjestad BK.

Regular Season

Mode

The twelve teams in the Elitserien contested first 50 games. During the first eight teams for the play- offs qualified, nine and ten the season was over for the teams ranked and the two had last placed in the Kvalserien to avoid relegation to the second division 's best compete. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.

Play-offs

The quarterfinals and semifinals, and the final were played in the mode " Best-of -Five".
