1996–97 Heineken Cup

The Heineken Cup 1996/97 was the second edition of the Heineken Cup, the main European cup competition in rugby union. It involved 20 teams from six countries, with England and Scotland were represented for the first time and teams from Romania were not invited due to the low power levels. The finals took place at Cardiff Arms Park on 25 January 1997. Cup winner was the French club CA Brive, who beat the Leicester Tigers in England in the final.

Mode

The participants were divided into four groups of five teams. Each team met only once on one of the opponents in the group, so there were two home games and two away games. For the quarter-finals, the top two of each group qualified.

The points are distributed as follows:

  • 2 points for a win
  • 1 point for a draw
