1996–97 IHL season
The 1996/97 season was the 52nd regular season of the International Hockey League. During the regular season, 19 teams contest each 82 games. In the play-offs, the Detroit Vipers prevailed and won the first Turner Cup in their history.

Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The San Francisco Spiders stopped the game operation.
- The Grand Rapids Griffins have been included as an expansion team in the league.
- The Atlanta Knights were to Quebec City, Quebec, moved and changed their name to Rafales de Québec.
- The Los Angeles Ice Dogs have been to Long Beach, California, moved and changed their name to Long Beach Ice Dogs.
- The Minnesota Moose have been to Winnipeg, Manitoba, moved and changed their name to Manitoba Moose.
- The Peoria Rivermen have been to San Antonio, Texas, relocated and changed its name to San Antonio Dragons.
