The season 1996/97 was the 59th regular season of the National League A. In the play-off final of the SC Bern Swiss champion was against the EV train. As part of the increase in the NLA NLB Champion, SC Herisau, was admitted to the next season in the NLA.

Mode
Were played by the ten teams first two double rounds of 18 games. The best six teams determined during Meisterrunde the game pairings for the playoffs. The other four teams determined to play nine days, the two other participants in the playoffs, taking with the points from the previous round. Quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals were played each after the mode best of five.
