The 116th U.S. Open 1996, an international tennis tournament and took place from 26 August to 9 September 1996 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park in New York, USA.
Defender of the individual were the Pete Sampras in the men's and Steffi Graf in the women. In the men's doubles were Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde, Gigi Fernandez in women's doubles and Natallja Swerawa the defending champions. Meredith McGrath and Matt Lucena was the defending champion in mixed doubles.
In this year, especially the defending champion could show off. Pete Sampras defeated in the final his compatriot Michael Chang in straight sets. In the women, there was a rematch of the Finals of 1995. Steffi Graf successfully defended her title against Monica Seles.
