1997–98 Czech Extraliga season

The season 1997/98 was the fifth regular hosting of the highest Czech league in ice hockey, the Extraliga. In the play-off final, last year's winner HC Petra Vsetín sat through 3-0 against HC Železárny Třinec and won the fourth title in a row. In the first league of the Czech Republic HC Orli Znojemští won the play-off finals and met in the relegation to the HC Bohemex Trade Opava.

In 52 games, all teams will play two complete double rounds, so each team has 26 each home and away games. The teams ranked 1-8 qualify directly for the play-offs, which will be played in best-of -five mode. For the teams ranked 9-13, the season is over after the main round. At the end of the season will take place in addition to Relegation Playoffs one where the last place team in the Extraliga and the winner of the play-off final of the first league to participate. In the mode best- of-seven with a maximum of seven games per team of climbers is determined in the Extraliga or relegated to the first division.

Regular Season

Before the start of the regular season, in June 1997, the HC Olomouc sold his Erstligalizenz to HC Becherovka Karlovy Vary. Carlsbad failed initially in the relegation on the rise in the Extraliga, but could still rise through the acquisition of the license yet. The HC Olomouc instead plays in the first league.

The crew of the HC Petra Vsetín, who won the Czech championship already in the previous three years, sat down against the HC Železárny Třinec 3-0 by winning the fourth title in club history. The third place went to the HC Vitkovice which this prize was won (Game 1 4:9 for Vitkovice, second game 2-1 for HC Sparta ) on goal difference.
