1997–98 DFB-Pokal

DFB Cup winner in 1998 was Bayern Munich. In the final at the Olympiastadion Berlin Bayern Munich won on 16 May 1998 in a balanced game 2-1 against the underdogs MSV Duisburg, the first took the lead through Bachirou Salou. After Markus Babbel was able to score the equalizer, Mario Basler scored in the 89th minute through a free-kick the winning goal for Bayern. The Bavarians had turned off the defending champions VfB Stuttgart in the semi-finals.

The Amateur Eintracht Trier struck successively the reigning UEFA Cup winners FC Schalke 04, and the reigning winner of the UEFA Champions League Borussia Dortmund and penetrated to the semifinals before.

Since the Bavarians took part as a master in the Champions League, in which they reached the final against Manchester United, took the MSV Duisburg at the last edition of the European Cup Winners' Cup in part, but failed in the first round of the Belgian Cup winners KRC Genk. For Duisburg remained to date the last appearance in a European competition.
