1997–98 Football League First Division

The Football League First Division in 1997/98 was the sixth season of the Football League First Division as only second highest English football league second division game and 95th time overall. Second division champion Nottingham Forest and in addition also the second-placed Middlesbrough FC went straight on to the Premier League. To this end, Charlton Athletic sat in the play- off games against Ipswich Town and by the final against AFC Sunderland and thus became the third climber. From the Premier League, three in the table below shunted Bolton Wanderers, Barnsley FC and Crystal Palace took in the second division next season 1998 /99, the free places. From the First Division in the third-class Football League Second Division had to descend Manchester City, Stoke City and Reading FC. Instead of the three teams participated in the following season 1998/99 Second Division winners Watford FC as well as the behind -ranking Bristol City and play-off winners Grimsby Town the free positions.
